A complete redesign for a UC Berkeley research institute, including a global climate-displacement data map.
The Othering & Belonging Institute at UC Berkeley brings together researchers and policymakers working on inclusion and equity. The site needed to work as a central hub - flexible enough for constantly updating articles and research, but visually cohesive throughout.
The design leans on generous white space, bold type at varied scales, and the Institute's existing blue-and-peach palette applied consistently (blue for actions, peach for links and titles), so the reading experience stays calm even across a very large amount of content.
One of the more interesting problems was the Inclusiveness Index - an annual ranking of countries and US states across measures like gender, race, religion and disability protections. I redesigned it with ranking overlays, colour-coded categories and new filtering, and rebuilt the detail views so dense per-state statistics stayed genuinely usable on a phone, not just technically responsive.
The Climate Refugee Database (an interactive map of climate-induced displacement) needed close collaboration to get right: showing fixed per-country data while letting users refine by multiple indicators, without the map becoming unreadable or the subject feeling reduced to decoration.
"Black Antelope did a phenomenal job of developing our website, including the CMS and design. They were able to work with anything we threw at them, and the finished product came out perfectly."

"I would say, first and foremost, their ability to communicate and support the client is superb. The delivery itself is also excellent, and we're very happy and proud of the website."

"They're responsive to our needs and requests and are so knowledgeable. They're really easy to work with, creative, technically savvy, and willing to fill gaps in our staffing."
