Complete overhaul and mobile-first redesign of the primary Viterbo website and fine arts theatre microsite.
Viterbo University is a private, Catholic, Franciscan liberal arts university located in La Crosse, Wisconsin, offering over 40 undergraduate majors and various graduate programmes across five colleges and school departments, with popular programmes in nursing, education, business and the arts.
Viterbo came to Black Antelope in desperate need of realigning their online presence to better present their breadth of programmes and content in a far more intuitive and engaging manner - the previous site struggled to deliver the core messaging, values and programme information through complex navigation systems and overly challenging page content.
The new site needed to provide a streamlined and exciting delivery system tailored to a large range of audiences including current and potential students, parents, alumni and faculty. The key focus was on a clear pathway to programme information and the application process, whilst showcasing the Catholic and Franciscan values that set Viterbo University apart.
Campus life does a lot of the persuading at a university, so the new site leans hard on Viterbo's own photography and video - gallery-driven pages built around real moments on campus, from Athletics game days to the now-famous Annual Pet Blessing Day. Interaction design carries a lot of that weight too: interactive video panels, considered button and hover transitions, and prominent placement for social media video and student testimonials all work together to make the site feel alive rather than static, encouraging prospective students to actually explore rather than skim.
With prospective students, parents and faculty all arriving from different devices and different starting points, the site needed to deliver information quickly and clearly everywhere, not just on desktop - full WCAG-accessibility compliance was non-negotiable throughout. To make Viterbo's full breadth of programmes genuinely findable, we built the search experience around Algolia, paired with an in-depth programme finder that lets visitors filter by interest, degree level or college - turning what was once a navigation problem into a confident, self-serve search.
Beyond the responsive redesign of the parent site, I was also tasked with designing a flexible microsite template Viterbo could roll out across its individual departments and centres in future. The Fine Arts Center became the concept vehicle for that system - its own distinct visual identity and content structure, built from the same underlying design language as the main site, so visitors always know they're still within the Viterbo family even as they move into a more specialised corner of it.
